I run both Ntmail and Rockliffe, one I have to watch and one I don't.

As for performance I can't say I have had problems with either dropping mail but there may be an issue with the ntmail.dll.

I don't need to kick the mail server to make it send mail either, I have never gotten that issue resolved for my Ntmail server.
