Thanks - figured it out (I hope). Looks like a not related problem that just looked related at the time. We had an instance of VNC server running on the server. When connected to the network, VNC would push explorer up over 98% CPU - when disconnected from the network, everything worked fine. Disabled VNC and all went back to normal.

Use Enterprise Manager to look at the Current Activity of your SQL Server. It should tell you any locks or running queries on our SQL server that may be causing delays. Check for a calls consolidation that may be taking a lot of resources.
