Does the new server maintain all the old server's settings: name, ip
address, etc.? I would be very interested in how you resolve this as I am
taking this same task on this weekend. I have replaced DNS server on the
same server but I am going to move the primary to another machine which will
then be renamed to what the primary was, with same IP address, etc.

I can tell you that after restoring DNS server on the same machine I had
some trouble with cache and the secondary zone.

Subject: [NTISP] Replaced DNS Server...Suggestions?

We have been running MS NT 4.0 with MS DNS for 4 years now... No problems
at all.
Last night we rotated the old server out for a new replacement as follows:

We copied the c:\winnt\system32\dns folder over to the new machine,
Then built the new DNS Server under DNS Manager,
Then recreated the Zones by hand.
Upon their creation, it saw and seemed to reference the \DNS folder and its
related PTR and A records with no problem. All seemingly intact.

Everything seemed fine until we dropped the former server. Now, only the
new DNS machine and the other local servers in the same NOC (on the same
class C) can surf the web using the new server. Everyone else only sees our
default start page that we host locally on one of that servers in the same

Our dialup users are seeing the "This page cannot be displayed" error, or
"site not found" msg.
Of course, when we take the primary (new server we started last night) DNS
offline, the secondary (on another class C IP) takes over after the standard
5 second delay.

Has anyone ever seen a similar instance, or brought a replacement DNS server
online to find similar problems? Suggestions would be appreciated. We are
unsure why the local servers in the same NOC and on the same class C seem to
be able to use the new DNS fine, but no one else can.

Thanks in advance for any help any of you can lend.
