Since modems are only required where an analog to digital conversion must
take place, all that's needed for PC-to-PC communications is a crossover
cable to swap the send and receive signals at either end. Some prefer to
buy a small device that looks like a gender adapter that does the crossover
for you. This is a good way to go if you have surplus DB25 cables and just
need to effect the crossover. Such adapters are generally only a few
dollars.

That's like asking why my cat feels a sudden, urgent need to be in another
room, breaking world speed records to get there. There is no understanding
such things.

Well, yes, but the battery tends to be included.
