Gaby,

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago and this is how I solved it.

1. Removed NIC cards completely from metwork control Applet
2. Downloaded most recent drivers from Supplier
3. Added both cards using new driver

And hey presto it all started working.

Alternatively you could try another make of NIC cards or perhaps although a
little extreme you could use RRAS which is a bit more robust than the basic
Tcp/ip routing provided by NT 4.

Good Luck

Jon

I would highly recommend installing RRAS for routing, it gives you much
better control of your routing tables and static routes.

Subject: IIS4 Problems...
From: Brian Lube <brian@mpinet.net>
Date: Mon, 13 Jul 1998 11:53:40 -0400

It seems that the Microsoft v.4 bug has arisen again (once more to the loss
of my hair).

I'm having a problem with IIS4 on NT Server 4. It locks all files for
exclusive use all the time. I've got customers calling in saying that they
cannot update their pages, all the time. I'm not able to remove people's
sites after they quit. I've got my Creative Services team starting up a
lynching mob.

Anyone got any ideas on this?

Thanks!

I ran across this
the timeout is set way to high for open connections to the web server, when
I installed it it was set to 900 seconds, it locks the pages and their that
anyone is looking at for that 900 seconds, and if someone reloads then the
time starts over. I changed the timeout to 120 and have had no problems
since.

Problem:

When I try to setup a new website thru the "website wizard" from a remote
workstation running iis 4 for administration purposes. I only get the ip of
the server the websites are running as a choice for the new website's ip
address on and not the available ones I have setup in the network in
control panel. But if i go and set the website thru the "website wizard" on
the local server I see all the ip address loaded on that server, any
thoughts?

I am running NT 4.0 SP3 with IIS 3.0, I was wondering the opinions of the
people on this list of how much is it worth to upgrade to IIS 4.0. I have
known people to upgrade, then have problems because they used the alias of a
tilde (~) example, http://www.isp.net/~userid Like with UNIX. I have not
had any problems yet. What are the pros and cons of IIS 4.0? Are there
any? Would appreciate input very much!

The biggest improvement (IMHO) is multiple domains. You can have multiple
domains now that are not all hooked off of the same root area with
mappings. Each domain has it's own logging capability, and can have it's
own anonymous directory. All of these things were important to us when we
made the decision to switch. Also, we've seen that IIS4 handles ASP better
than IIS3, and FP98 is built in.

That's just what we've noticed here as for IIS4. It a bit slower, but
seems to actually be an improvement (when you can find all those pesky
variable that one can miss <g>).

just my $.02

Brian,

If the problem you are having is that people are not able to FTP to their
directories on your web server, there is a very specific procedure I follow
to set up users on NT, to set permissions on directories, and to set up
virtual web sites in IIS4 that WORKS. If you'd like me to send you a copy
of the procedure, I can e-mail you a Word document attachment or fax it to
you.

If that's not your problem, then good luck!!!

So Brian (or anyone else on the list);

Is there a method in IIS4 to give someone FP extensions on a sub web
without that person being in the NT SAM database? If not then I imagine
you have a groups of users in a local group that have very restricted
rights? Can you give me an example. I have made sure the machine is NOT a
domain controller, backup controller, etc, just a plain server. I really
do not want to have several thousands of domain users running around trying
to manage. I wished that NT had a reality check on managing users and a
directory method that was logical.

I am looking to change to IIS4, but do not want to set up groups and
permissions to a directory structure in the OS for simple web publishing.

Hello.

Can clients running Windows 95 browse my network using just TCP/IP ?

I mean, they dial into my NT4 RRAS server which only accepts or allows
TCP/IP for dial ins.

I tried using a cable labeled Pin to Pin - or what you might possibly call a
Straight Thru pinout. But it doesn't work.

So I was hoping maybe someone knowledgable could show me the right pinout.

Are you trying to connect two serial ports together by cable? If so I can
give you a pinout, which will connect 2 Win95 machines or two NT servers
using Direct Cable Connection and this serial cable as a "modem".

Subject: How could you log CGI CPU usage by domain on NT
From: rfink@worldpassage.net (Richard Fink)
Date: Mon, 13 Jul 1998 21:57:24 -0700

We want to be able to monitor/log CGI CPU usage by domain on an NT Web Server so we can charge for excess utilization. We use O'Reilly WebSite Pro 2.0 which allows us to run a domain's CGI in a NT User's security context. Since each domain can be set up as an NT User we could track the domain's CPU usage by "NT User", if we knew how.

How can this be done ? Except for PM I am not aware of any CPU logging services.

Has anybody accomplished this ?

Thanks.

You will need to "swap" a few of the lines.

Your options are:-

Table A-1 Null Modem Cable

Pins
(Port) Name Definition Direction Pins (Terminal)
2 TXD Transmit Data Output 3
3 RXD Receive Data Input 2
4 RTS Request to Send Output 5
5 CTS Clear to Send Input 4

6,8 DCD Data Carrier Input 20
Detect
7 GND Ground 7

20 DTR Data Terminal Output 6,8
Ready
