Urgent.. Domain being added to end of usernames

Anybody have any idea where to turn OFF the option of adding the domain
name to users login. I've got user joeblow trying to login as
joeblow@midusa.net which the server just pukes on since it thinks that
is the username. We just brought this online yesterday, and out
helpdesk is getting swamped by people having similar problems. We have
not been able to reproduce it on our machine, so we have no idea how to
turn it off.
Anybody who could help would get a cookie.. (maybe crumbs... postal
service ain't always the best)
