Just put the A record for the domain without any host, in first. Yes it will
see it as both whatever.com and www.whatever.com but that works for us. Our
email machine and one of our webservers are on this machine: www.ia-omni.com
and we've had over a million pieces of emial go through it over the past 2
years.
