I must say that (running NTMail v.7) I prefer the Emerauth.dll over
Gordano's SQLAuth.dll for performance.
The only shortcoming is that it does not allow NTMail to list users in
their (NTMail's) interface. Which consequently prevents me from being
able to email my domain users when necessary.
For email authentication and anuthorization it works quite well though.

Emerald 2.5 supports IMail 6. Emerald 4.0 supports Imail 6 and Imail 7.

Pesonally, I wish all vendors would just use EmerAuth and not try and
access the Emerald DB directly. EmerAuth has a simliar smart cache
built into it that RadiusNT/X does. This offers a tremendous
performance advantage over direct interfaces that do not. However, as a
result of how IMail loads and unloads the EmerAuth DLL for each request,
IMail users can't take advantage of the cache. :(

The other advantage is (for example, Imail 6) when the Emerald DB schema
changes, there is nothing the vendor or you need to do for the mail
server to work. EmerAuth handles the translation for you.
