get a simple port scanner utility and run the test on one of your =
servers. If you see ports 137-139 light up, poof you let the whole =
world in. To disable, switch to Windows 2000 and use the easy feature =
called (disable NETBIOS over TCP/IP) or in NWinblowz 4.0 goto network > =
protocols > TCP/IP > and you will see it somewhere in there... I don't =
got an NT 4.0 Machine to test on since we are on Win2k now and I must =
say, ROCK Solid.
It is about time Microsoft has released a product that may be more =
robust than Unix. (oh oh here comes the flame/NTvsUnix war) hehe.

Hi Rudy,

How do I know if I'm running NetBIOS over TCP/IP ?

If I am, how can I turn it off ?

What port do I need to block in my router ?

Well to suggest you a few links

http://www.interlacken.com
http://www.microsoft.com/security
http://www.ntsecurity.net
http://www.bhs.com
http://www.l0pht.com
http://www.hackernews.com

One thing you need to make sure is that you do NOT run Netbios over =
TCP/IP
or if you have to, block it out on your Router. This way, you make sure
that nobody can connect to your drives and wipe them out. Security =
Sites
are the best places to check out along with Hacker news sites. You will
baiscally get all info on how to protect your network.

Hope this helps.

Lord, what haven't I read. Alot of it has prepared me for what I need to
know.
I have found several resources on Unix ISP related but not alot on NT 4. =
I
am
very familiar with NT, but not all that famaliar with unix. Most things
relate
to setting up different boxes for each function. I can't afford to do =
that
at
this time. I have found complete walkthroughs for UNIX systems but not =
NT. I
am looking for resources to mainly make sure I have not missed anything =
that
"I should really know."

As far as books, etc... I have about 20 different ones here.

Scott, I am curious, just what have you read before you started this

Did any of it prepare you for the task at hand?

Hi list,

I am setting up an ISP on NT Server 4. I am using 2 servers on my system
because of budget at this time. I would like some input from the =
experienced
on how to set the software up on the two systems. I know I need the =
primary
and secondary DNS servers on seperate systems. What suggestions do you =
have
as
far as setting up radius, mail, web server, ftp, etc... on each server. =
For
example, should I put web sever on with the primary DNS server or =
secondary,
etc...

Any suggestions on what software to use for each purpose?

Also, any resources on the web that I might try to help out with setting
this
up would be greatly appreciated.

Yours Newbie,
Scottie
