crypt is a fairly standard method of encrpting passwords, where you
don't
want to get into a legal battle with US export restrictions (MD5).
You should be able to find quite a bit out about crypt, by doing some
searches for crypt.c:

I'd have to check on MD5 support, but the latest RadiusNT does
correctly identify/support MD5 in the users file, but I'm not
positive about the database.
