Hello.

Can MS Proxy Server 2.0 proxy for IRC ?

Can it filter chat rooms ?

If you use Winsock Proxy, yes. Only Web-Proxy can't do it.
To use Winsock-Proxy you need to install a piece of client software on your
machine, and therefore you need an
netbios connection to the proxy-server and a valid nt-login... only useful
for company-access to the internet.

If you have enabled the winsocklets and the client is using the MS Proxy
Client that comes with 2.0 , Yes. Otherwise the answer is no.

Not that I am aware of. It kind of like asking it to filter your email its
just not its job.

Or just give them the client files on a disk or allow them to download them
and run it directly on their machine, works for us.

I need some advice on what proxy server software / OS to go with, or at least be pointed in the right direction.
Is there any NT based software that can match it with the likes of say FreeBSD/Squid.
Any recommendations appreciated...

This brings up a question.

I am considering one of the filtered services H2O2 ? Websense, etc and have
found a commonality: $2500 for a machine they make (a linux P-200, running
their routing/filtering product) plus a monthly fee that costs about
$2/subscriber.

Are there satisfied customers among this list for these products? Are they
worth the money to you? Have they helped you find new/continuing
subscribers?
Is there a less expensive alternatives like a Linux machine and your own
lists, etc (actually the services are up to a quarter million "filtered
sites" and they claim to have people reviewing sites for filtering
everyday).

This is a significant investment but one that I see making sense so I want
to do it the right way and get my moneys worth. I would appreciate your
comments.

I use WebSense for NT and it works well. However, I've lots of other
features that I want included like proxying for multiple IRC servers,
customer filtering on a per user basis, etc ...

The filtering of websites really works. I like it and it's cheaper than
SmartFilter.

LittleBrother (www.kansmen.com ) is cheaper but I've not used it.

I heard the the was a commercial DNS to Bind out. We are using the 4.9.6
and are looking to upgrade. Does anyone know if this is true and if so
where is it. I looked at software.com but they only had 4.9.5 shareware on
the site.

You can use MetaInfo, they ported 8.1.2

Latest public release is 4.9.7 and it's available from www.isc.org

Yea, instead of using the machine name use the IP address.

Subject: syslogd daemon question
From: Mike Miller <michael@abraxis.com>
Date: Tue, 11 Aug 1998 11:02:19 -0400

Hello,

Has anyone out there seen a NT syslog daemon that will log to an ODBC
datasource (perhaps a SQL or Access database) instead of logging to a text
file? Since I doubt anyone has any real use for such a service, it
probably does not exist, but I have a rather strange project that requires
a syslog be written to a database table. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

-Mike Miller

Try SL4NT from 32bit.bhs.com. Its a fully featured syslog with ODBC supportfor NT.

There are two syslog daemons listed at the site below, but I don't knowanything about them...http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/solutions/softwarepart/tools/special.asp

Use Wins on you network. I assume that it is a private WAN/LAN and not aVPN. Remember though that replication requires named pipes ormulti-protocol network support on your SQL servers

This can happen at anytime of the day or night. Usually within an hour either way of midnight, sometimes in the middle of the day.

This system has been up solid for a year and a half with no major changes, software or hardware. I have re-applied the service pack and hotfixesseveral times. Everything except complete new re-installation of the O/S.Done all the normal things like chkdsk, memroy diags, hardware diags, etc.

What you can do is just do an import of the data into an access database fromthe text file. You can make the text file an ODBC File source and have itimport into SQL or Access. I have does this with Access but you have tomanually execute it to import. You could probably create a macro that willautomatically do this every hour or so. With SQL, I have not tried it butwith SQL Features, I think it would be possible to set up a "replication" fromthe Text file to the database.

Did any of you have the Internet Information Server Assistant fromMediaHouse on your machines in the past? I was having a similar problemfor quite some time and finnally I ran accross an old dll that had beenused by IISA and a corresponding registry entery. Since I have removedboth of these I have not had a problem with it again.

Do you get a chance to look at utilization on the box itself before itlocks up? Are you sure no one is attacking the box itself? Take a look atyour router and see. Hate things like this. How many IPs do you havebound to the NIC? Have you tried sniffing the network to see what the boxis doing?

Heh, I had a client that complained of a slow NT server, the sucker had oneof those cute openGL screen savers running....that sucker really peggedserver utilization. Oh yeah and had like a 3MB BMP for a background....

We have been having the same problem but we have installed Service Monitor(shareware product) to restart it. A bigger problem is that it shuts downbut the service is still running in the control panel. Only a rebootseems to clear this. We have tracked the problem down to Emurl fromSeattle Labs (hope they are listening). They say they have a fix butwe have yet to get it.

John,I once had a similar problem and tracked it down to file permissions forMRTG. 'rateup' would just take all resources whenever it tried to write todisk (across the LAN) until it eventually crashed.
