Hello,

I am looking for a good FTP server for NT. I have no desire to install
IIS or any subset of IIS. It would be nice if it would authinticate to
NetScape Directory Server, but that is not really necessary. I have
used War-FTPD but I really don't want to create "yet another password"
for everyone. Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

War FTP is the easiest and most secure I've setup. It's also free andavailable at tucows.com under server daemons!

I assume when you say IIS you mean the http server. It is possible to runthe ftp server without the web server... If you don't want to run themanagement console you are going to miss the boat in the near future onother issues. The M$ FTP server is excellent, if you haven't tried it youshould give it a shot.

MRTG seems to be the standard tool. It is free and runs on UNIX or NT, itgraphs from the hour to the year. A quick search should turn up somelinks to it's source.

You mean, like a network monitoring tool (or a portsniffer)? WhatsupGoldwatches my pop3/smtp/radius/telnet/nas's & other stuff and can page me,email me, etc, if anything drops. It also has web based management so youcan get a status board remotely. www.ipswitch.comIt's $$bucks tho, about $995.

If it's a portsniffer you're looking for, I suppose you can use Asmodeus(now known as Webtrends Security Scanner, I believe). www.asmodeus.com

If your router has SNMP capabilities you could use any SNMP program....

Compaq has one that is intended to be used with their products, but I am using it on Cisco, Livingston and several other products just fine... It has a graph that you can run and see what your percentages for in and out bound traffic on each port of the box....

The latest version of Netelligent Management Software is at:http://www.compaq.com/support/networking/files/netelligent/software/inde x.html

I use Servers Alive, rather than whatsup. This product is more along thelines of shareware. Unregistered it will check 10 hosts or ports and for$69 you get unlimited. The URL is http://www.cmconline.com/salive/

Or else a slightly less expensive commercial version ($150) would beEnterprise Monitor from Mediahouse (www.mediahouse.com) I also see thatthey are coming out with a new version, currently in Beta.

No.

I am looking for a command line utility that will "ping" a port such as 80(http) or 21 (ftp) and report whether the URL is responding or not.

I am quite familiar with Ipsentry, Enterprise Monitor, WhatsUp, etc. Butthose are all windows based programs (I need commandline) and I want toparse the response into another program.

No idea if this exactly fits your needs but OCXHttp from flicks softwaremight do it:http://www.flicks.com/OCXHttp/

You would have to call it from windows scripting host if that counts ascommand line.

If it times out it will return a text error.http://www.flicks.com/OCXHttp/docs/GET.htm

and you can get the URL response text withhttp://www.flicks.com/OCXHttp/docs/Content.htm
