Subject: Question about BESS proxy server
From: "OTR Communications, LLC" <otrcomm@sedona.net>
Date: Fri, 12 Jun 1998 07:54:37

We are a new start ISP and will be offering clients optional access to the
internet through a BESS proxy filter developed by N2H2. I have been told
that it is possible to point these clients to the BESS proxy by selecting
one of the RADIUS attributes under the SERVICES tab of the MBR. I was told
that this particular ATTRIBUTE and associated VALUE will instruct my
Portmaster3 to point this particular client to the gateway for the BESS
proxy. Does anyone know if this will work, and if it will, what is the
ATTRIBUTE to select?

Also, how can I change the First and Last names associated with an MBR?
Once the MBR is initially setup and saved, I have not been able to change
the names. I can change the name on the Master Billing Information card,
but it does not update whatever database the original MBR is stored in.
The name does stayed in the Master Billing Information card, but the Search
button in the Main Emerald menu finds the old record with the original
First and Last names. What kind of database structure are these records
stored in? Where are they located? Can I change the information in SQL?
How?

Thanks,

Murrah Boswell

Dear Dusan,
Sounds like your radius server is dying. Maybe you are low on ram,
processor speed, or hard drive space. Run a program in the foreground is a
lot less processor intensive that running in the background.
I use Norton System Doctor to monitor system resources. It does a lot
better job than the tools that come with NT.

Hi Dale and all

Maybe it is just a coincidence but today we have switched our service to
PRI lines and our authentication stopped working when Radius is running
as a service. Radius -x15 works fine. As soon as I stop it from DOS
prompt it no longer works. To make things worst Dr. Watson jumps
inexplicably and after that nothing works. I have adjusted parameters in
Radius tab done a "report" command. Have exact number of ports. I am
running RadiusNT 2.2. Portmasters 3, Emerald 2.2.23 and Emerald Admin
2.2.19. What am I missing?

I need urgent help!!!! Thanks.

Dale,

We were entering some more accounts in Emerald when all of a sudden we got
a prompt saying we have exceeded our license limit and have been shut out
of Emerald completely. The message says we are 2 over our limit. We called
sales, only to get a recording. We need to purchase an additional 500
licensees NOW.

How would the software allow us to enter over our limit?

Thank you,

I'm guessing they are talking about filters, to prevent the custmoer
from just getting around the proxy server. So you are probably
looking for Framed-Filter. Does BESS comes with any documentation
pertaining to this?

When you are searching both the MBR and service, the service information
is displayed in the results. Therefore, you need to change the SERVICE
information as well as the MBR information. Edit the service and go to
the personal tab. Change that name as well.

I upgraded to Radius 2.5 and used the Radius_25_124_Update files. I alsoused the rad25_up.sql script to update the database. Users can loginwithout a problem and everything seems to be running ok. Except for thefollowing errors in the logfile:

Fri Jun 12 11:07:20 1998: ODBC Error:23000:547: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]INSERT statement conflicted with COLUMN FOREIGN KEY constraint 'FK__RadLogs__RadLogM__0642F512'. The conflict occurred in database 'Emerald', table 'RadLogMsgs', column 'RadLogMsgID'

Fri Jun 12 14:55:45 1998: ODBC Error:37000:103: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The identifier that starts with '`o' is too long. Maximum length is 30.

Why am I getting these errors and what can I do to correct them? Thanks in advanced!Eric Jensen

A temporary work around is to consolidate a bunch of accounts as separateservices under a single account. Once the license is available you can thendo things properly. Of course, this won't work for billing, but at least thenew users will have access to the service.

Thanks, but the problem is we are all locked out of Emerald and can not do anything.

This is most likely because your RadLogMsgs table is empty. You canpopulate it with the following statements (execute in isql_w on yourEmerald database).

INSERT RadLogMsgs VALUES(0, "Generic Message", 0)INSERT RadLogMsgs VALUES(1, "Generic Error", 5)

INSERT RadLogMsgs VALUES(10, "User Not Found", 3)INSERT RadLogMsgs VALUES(11, "Bad Password", 3)INSERT RadLogMsgs VALUES(12, "User Expired", 2)INSERT RadLogMsgs VALUES(13, "User OverDue", 2)INSERT RadLogMsgs VALUES(14, "Over Login Limit", 1)INSERT RadLogMsgs VALUES(15, "No Time Left", 1)INSERT RadLogMsgs VALUES(16, "Port Not Allowed", 2)INSERT RadLogMsgs VALUES(19, "No Attributes", 3)

INSERT RadLogMsgs VALUES(60, "Parse Error", 5)INSERT RadLogMsgs VALUES(100, "Chap Not Allowed", 5)

I'm not sure which table/field this is. Its possible that this iscaused by a garbage RadLogs entry, though.
