Ok, the exact message is:

C:\REM [HEADER]
Configuration: EEPROM not installed.

And the user notices some flicker on her screen before this message
appears.

Here's her AUTOEXEC.BAT :
================================
C:\WINDOWS\net start
C:\PROGRA~1\MCAFEE\VIRUSS~1\SCAN.EXE C:\
@IF ERRORLEVEL 1 PAUSE
REM [Header]
@ECHO OFF

REM [CD-ROM Drive]
REM [Display]
REM MODE CON: COLS=80 LINES=25
REM [Sound, MIDI, or Video Capture Card]
REM SOUNDTST.COM
REM [Mouse]
REM MOUSE.COM
REM [Miscellaneous]
REM FACTORY.COM

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\sndtune.exe

=================================

And here's her config.sys

=================================

REM [Header]
DOS=HIGH,UMB

REM [SCSI Controllers]
REM DEVICE=SCSI.SYS
REM [CD-ROM Drive]
REM [Display]
REM DEVICE=DISPLAY.SYS
REM [Sound, MIDI, or Video Capture Card]
REM DEVICE=SOUND.SYS
REM [Mouse]
REM DEVICE=MOUSE.SYS
REM ------------------
REM [Miscellaneous]
REM DEVICE=SMARTDRV.EXE

Her computer is a clone. It has an Asustek motherboard ( don't know what
model ) and has a Pentium 166-MMX chip. It's got 32 MB EDO RAM ( 2 x 16 )
and my brother threw in the client's old SIMM RAM's ( same speed and number
of pins ).

It's got an Opti Audio 16 sound card which my brother and I had lots of
trouble installing - until it just suddenly worked. When we view the Device
Manager, we still see question or even exclamation marks beside it. And
there's also this "Unknown Device" that has a question mark on it's side.

The video card is ans S3-Trio card with 1 MB memory. An external Practical
Peripherals modem is attached.

The hard disk is a 2.1 GB Maxtor ( or Seagate ). I'm not sure.

No new hardware has been installed at all. This just happened when the
client's little daughter turned off the PC without shutting down Windows
95.

Any ideas, folks ?
