Although I have been very pleased with USRs tech support I suppose that
if I didn't have USR modems I wouldn't need to use their support in the
first place.

And when USR and the rest of the world agree on a 56K standard will it
be the same story all over again...

ROCKWELL <--> ROCKWELL :-)

I think we all know the answer! But, I hope I'm wrong. And I'll bet that
both USR and the ROCKWELL contingent are hoping that the upgrade will
only involve a software upgrade.
