In the years that I've been using USR sportsters (not here at the ISP),
I've used "AT&F1" as the initialization string (with an add-on of "S11=40"
to make it dial real fast). With that init string, I've never once had a
problem with any USR 14.4, 28.8, 33.6 modem I've had. I have no idea what
strings are optimal for the older "Si" series 14.4s or the WinModems.
&F1 sets the modem to factory default settings for hardware flow control,
and it just happens to be optimal.

We have some users experiencing unstable connections. They all
have US Robotics modems. Is there an AT command or something
they can do to fix it other than buying another modem ?
