In my case I've found the following 2 rules apply well to increasing SQL
Server performance.

1. Install more RAM
2. See rule #1

To emphasize this, at Dales recommendation I boosted RAM in one of our SQL
boxes by 64 megs and increased the memory usage in the server config. All
my SQL queries now are running at LEAST 4times faster than they were
before.
