Pardon my inappropriate use of correct terminology...

We usually DUMP (via the db maint wiz) Emerald, Master & MSDB db's.
The pubs and tempdb are just samples

Is that better?

You do NOT backup those. You need to do a dump, and backup the dump.
Even if you are backing up all your *.dat files, you would have to
stop your SQL Server to do that. If you just make a dump, you can do
it on the fly w/out any outage. I use SQL Executive to dump the
databases about 30 mins before the nightly backup kicks off.
