Actually, we are trying to get together something for a client who wants to
co-locate with us. He wants a bid by this week and wants to know how much
we would charge him for file transfer. I need to figure out the difference
between bits and bytes so I can make up a chart for him and others.

Yes, 8 bits to one byte.

However, if you are trying to work out the time it takes to transfer a file
over TCP/IP,
often it is better to calculate it as 10 bits to a byte to account for frame
headers etc.
